WISE is a promising new contender in the market for digital forensic software. With the support of the international investigation community, WISE, which was originally conceived in Ohio, USA, has developed into a complete tool kit containing an unusually wide range of functions.

In addition to support for standard forensic activities, WISE offers a number of features that allow immediate access to evidence in computers in areas of the computer that are normally inaccessible. WISE also supports evidence gathering from most commonly used PDAs.

WISE was designed to be intuitive. It uses ribbons and moveable panels similar to those used in Microsoft Office 2010®. These ribbons and panels make it possible to use WISE with multiple monitors.

WISE offers a rapid analysis function for the five most popular Internet browsers and displays data on downloads, Favorites/Bookmarks and search terms and other interesting information in a well-organized, easy-to-use overview.

With WISE, displaying an overview of all Internet pages visited is possible with a single click of the mouse. The overview includes all relevant data, including time and frequency of visits to websites. Configurable filters help the user navigate through the data.

In cases involving use of modern multi-core processors, WISE’s multi-threaded carving engine is able to use all cores of the processor, to deliver extremely high speeds. Of course, WISE also allows the user to add headers and footers and to share with other users, making carving into the more exotic file types a breeze.

After carving is finished, WISE makes taking photographs of the evidence it uncovers fast and easy with overview pages. A filter can be used to limit the results and eliminate photos that do not contain visible pixels.

With the help of special filters, WISE’s Forensic Browser function makes it possible to place all files into a timeline view or to limit a search to deleted files only.

WISE places information regarding use of Windows shortcuts into a simple, intuitive overview. Similarly to pre-fetch files, WISE displays data on when and how often programs, documents, network locations and links to these items are used.

The iPhone (and other iOS devices such as the iPad) saves a large amount of useful information on the user. In addition to standard data such as address book, calendar and text messaging data, WISE makes it possible uncover data from applications such as WhatsApp and Facebook and to display the recovered data in an easy-to-use overview

Many investigators are unaware of the fact that the iPhone stores a lot of geographical data. Analysis of such data makes it possible to form a clear picture of the owner’s movements, far back in time. WISE can export this geographic data directly to Google Earth and Google Maps
